![]() | The Spirit of Ancient Korea on a Ceramic Tile |
Around the 1st century A.D., three kingdoms emerged on the Korean Peninsula led first by Koguryo, then shortly thereafter
followed Paekche and Shilla. By the late 5th century Koguryo had reached its golden age and became a powerful nation
with territory including the Manchurian area of modern China in the north to an area south of the Han River, where
present-day Seoul is situated. Even though the three kingdoms were eventually unified by the Shilla king in 676, Koguryo
had to bear the brunt of aggression from northern neighbors while wielding the Koreans' valiant spirit.Because of its geopolitically strategic point, Koguryo had to face innumerable military conflicts. These trials, however, made the spirit of its people even more tough and tenacious. Meanwhile, in a cultural aspect, Koguryo was able to establish a peculiar mix of local and international flavor through direct or indirect cultural exchanges with Middle-Asian and East-Asian countries. The real character of Koguryo can be found in the Koguryo mural tomb paintings which have been well preserved through the centuries.
As of today, more than fifty mural tomb paintings have been excavated, mainly around Pyongyang, the capital of the ancient kingdom. Though they are lacking perspective, the most notable characteristic of the paintings is their mobility and life. Those characteristics are the outcome of the aesthetic sense of the Koguryo people who tried to embody liveliness in all things. Judging from the casting of energy even to inanimate matters, the animistic concepts which existed in the main social stratum of the Koguryo people in those days is said to be reflected in the paintings. Some say this is animistic symbolism. In any case, Koguryo mural tomb painting is considered to be one of the most excellent cultural achievements produced in the whole of East Asia at the time.
One and half centuries later, the paintings on the walls of the ancient tombs are gaining new life in a small underground
space in Seoul's Banpo-dong. Kwon Young-Dal, the president of Koguryo Art, is putting the spirit of the Koguryo people
onto small ceramic tiles. He says, "I think Koguryo mural paintings are the most valuable cultural inheritance from which
we can breathe the spirit of old Korea." For inspiration, he has visited China to look at the original paintings himself. "The
ceramic tiles are very popular among Korean professors and Japanese travelers. And demand will surely increase from
overseas countries because these paintings portray the history, culture, and art of Korea all at the same time," he added.
"I don't look at it as manufacturing simple ceramics. I'm trying to put the spirit of ancient Korea onto each ceramic tile. And then, I can expect that each tile on any wall of any living room in any country in the world will not lose its liveliness," he says. Is it an exaggeration to say that these new paintings incarnate the breath of the Koguryo painter who sketched the ancient masterpiece 1,500 years ago?
