Ginseng has been considered "a panacea" since ancient times, already described 2,000 years ago in a Chinese book as a miraculous medicine. The effects of this medicinal plant, traditionally used to build up blood and keep the body healthy, has long been recognized in China, Japan, and throughout Asia. A single mountain ginseng root, grown naturally in the wild, weighs only about 30 to 300 grams but fetches several thousand to more than ten thousand dollars depending on its age. And despite its expense, it is in high demand. This rare wild root, several dozen to hundreds of years old, is said to be particularly effective. The deciduous perennial ginseng plant belongs to the araliaceae family and grows in Korea, China, Japan, North America and Siberia. Different varieties native to these regions have different botanical names. Korean ginseng was given the botanical name "Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer" in 1843 by Russian scientist C.A. Meyer. By examining the origin of this botanical name, "pan" means "everything" and "axos" means "medicine." So "panacea" is evident even in its name. The word "ginseng" is found only in the name of the Korean variety of the plant. That means that only the Korean plant is a genuine ginseng species containing all the efficacy and attributes of ginseng.

The most suitable region for growing ginseng lies between latitudes 36 and 38 north. The climate must be mild and relatively dry with four distinct seasons. Temperature fluctuations between day and night should be moderate. The soil must be fertile and well drained with adequate rainfall of around 1,200 mm yearly. The soil and air must not be contaminated. The central part of the Korean peninsula is the only place in the world that meets all these requirements.

Farmed ginseng is commercially produced in this region and is usually harvested four to six years after seeded in the field. This fresh ginseng is called water ginseng or live ginseng. Water ginseng normally contains about 75 percent moisture, so it is subject to damage or rot during transportation and cannot be stored for more than a week. Dried ginseng, on the other hand, which can be stored for a long period is called white ginseng. "Red ginseng" is steamed and dried six-year-old harvested water ginseng. The color of water ginseng changes to red after being processed, hence its name, and it is known that after ginseng roots have been in the ground for six years, all the effective nutrients have fully matured. Red ginseng also acquires various peculiar essences beneficial to the human body in its manufacturing process. Processing raw ginseng into red ginseng is to gain this essence.

Korean Red Ginseng is characterized by its widely varied composition of ginsenosides, the major active ingredients. A total of 26 ginsenosides have been identified in Korean Red Ginseng and their chemical structures have been completely established.
