High-Efficiency Double-Overhead Diesel Engine

Kia Motors has developed a new engine. The 2.9-liter J3 is an DOHC (Double-Overhead Cam), 16-valve direct injection diesel engine with intercooler and turbocharger and was specifically developed to meet future Korean and European environmental safeguards and to satisfy consumer demands of fuel efficiency and high performance. The J3's HSDI (High-Speed Direct-Injection) in-house developed technology enables the engine to develop a high-power output of 135 horsepower despite its relatively small displacement of 2.9 liters.

In addition, the J3 utilizes the combustion method of direct injection, an established trend in international small diesel engine design. The engine develops maximal thermal efficiency through the use of a high-pressure fuel pump, while a vertically set nozzle structure optimizes fuel spraying. The overall effect is improved output power and fuel consumption, by 30 percent and 20 percent, respectively. The J3 was developed with the aim of minimizing noise and vibration, a major demerit of existing diesel engines. Vibration is reduced by the use of a symmetric cylinder block and a timing belt case and ladder frame at the lower part of cylinder block. It also employs a balance shaft to eliminate secondary inertial force. Meanwhile, operational noise is minimized by use of the timing-belt drive method, and valve noise by an hydraulic lash adjustor.
The engine size is so compact that it can be used on small autos and recreation vehicles, or small trucks and trailers. The J3 may well serve as a model for the world's auto industry as it prepares for the exacting pollution control standards of the 21st century.

New 6000 Aluminum Alloys
Iljin Co. has developed a new Al alloy by adding manganese to the conventional 6000 series to improve its problems of low tensile strength and poor extrudability. The addition brings out uniformally distributed fine Mn disperoids in the Al matrix which increases strength and release stress concentration. Furthermore, additional tensile, strength is gained through a normal manufacturing process but without the benefit of an aging process, so making the end product more economic.
While, aging boosts tensile strength by 35 percent, the new alloy possesses a tensile strength 20 percent greater than age-treated 6063 alloy. The new alloy is therefore expected to substitute age-treated 6063, conventional alloys as well as mild steel in the fields of transportation, construction and agriculture. It has received the KT (Korea Technology) mark from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the EM (Excellence Mark) by the Korea National Quality Bureau. Iljin began production of the new alloy last year and aims to capture 10 percent of the domestic market in 1998.

Marine and Offshore Plant Automation System

Samsung Heavy Industries Co. (SHI) has developed an automatic function control and monitoring system for marine use and shipboard plants designated the SSAS-21C. Marine use includes alarm monitoring, power management, hydraulic valve remote control, fire detection, and integrated system control and monitoring. The SSAS-21C is also suitable for application in power plant control systems, water and waste water treatment plants, incineration plants, and automated production lines.

Following the development of its prototype in December 1995, 32 SSAS-21Cs have so far been installed aboard ships for purposes of vessel system and shipboard plant control.
The SSAS-21C features multiple processors, client/server remote process calling software architecture, flexible network connection (Serial and LAN), mass database linkage, internet message exchange, and various PLC connections. The SSAS-21C has been certified to the standards of the Korea Register, DNV (Norway), ABS (United States), LR (Great Britain), GL (Germany), and ISO 9001.

Rament Aloewhitening

Rament Aloewhitening is a whitening cosmetic based on aloewhite, an aloe vera derivative. Existing whitening cosmetic components have a reaction mechanism which competitively restrains the activation of tyrosinase, an enzyme which helps form melanin. Aloewhite has a different reaction mechanism. It responds in a non-competitive fashion to produce a better whitening effect with fewer applications, thereby producing the same cosmetic effect more economically.

As well as a whitening function, Rament Aloewhitening possesses moisturizing, protection and anti-aging properties by virtue of its superior abilities in inhibiting the skin-darkening phenomena. In a battery of safety tests, it has met every standard. In addition, it has exhibited no change of appearance and physical property under various conditions of daylight, heat, pH levels, etc. Because Rament Aloewhitening is produced from aloe vera rind which is generally discarded during the processing of aloe vera, unit costs are lowered giving the product a competitive price advantage in its field. Consequently, prospects for exports of the finished product and its raw material look good.

Integrated Communications Program

By using the SEROME Teleman 97 program in your personal computer, it's possible to perform all the existing telephone functions such as ARS, telephone and fax. In addition, it enables video communication/conferencing on the basis of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) international standard for video communication, ITU-T H.324. The program's database system, which stores messages and addresses, gives it the potential to be used as the basis of an office automation program by installing it in your PC to handle functions as telephone answering, automatic dialling and faxing. Technologically similar to its predecessors H.320 used in ISDN and H.323 which supports LAN, it is easily transferable.
This program has excellent compatibility with other products due to its compliance with the ITU-T H.324 international standard governing video communication. Because existing programs use different communication standards they often have low compatibility.

Interface with the program is through the image of a mobile telephone dialling pad on the computer screen. By embodying a wide range of functions, the integrated nature of the program distinguishes SEROME Teleman 97 from others of its kind now on the market. Based on Windows 95, the program facilitates a variety of communication services through selected hardware. Through its adherence to the G3 fax protocol, it's possible with H.324 to transfer images and send faxes of the highest quality. Additionally, there are convenient telephone-type functions including volume control on the speaker phone, voice amplification on the handset microphone, and redialing.

Heat-Resistant Ionomeric Copolymer

LG Ionomeric Resin offers the best combination of good impact strength, heat distortion temperature, as well as ease of processing on conventional thermoplastic moulding equipment. Typical applications of LG Ionomeric Resin include automotive interiors and electrical equipment which require prolonged resistance to elevated temperature. An attractive feature of this ionomeric resin is that it is easily mixed with conventional styrenic resins such as ABS, ASA, and others. The broad range of physical properties including heat resistance is but one reason for its rapidly growing demand.

An additional feature of the resin is the emulsion process involved in its production is environmentally friendly. The solid content of the emulsion latex is extremely high and the polymerization time is much shorter than that of current processes. These advantages enable the reduction of associated waste water, the minimization of environmental pollution, and increased productivity.

Winner 3A Hard Disk Drives

Samsung Storage Division (SSD) released its Winner (WA3) 3.5" hard disk drive in August 1997 and has since been a marked success in the under-$1,000 consumer, desktop and SOHO PC market. To minimize program risk and optimize the time-to-volume ratio of the highly-leveraged Samsung ASIC controller during the WA3's development, company engineers looked to the mature third-generation head disk assembly (HDA) of the Winner product family as the development platform of the W3A.
The hard disk drive (HDD) in the W3A represents the next level of integration from the previous generation of ATA/Disk Controller/Buffet Management/ECC blocks. To that controller have been added the internal Digital Signal Processor (DSP) core and embedded servo-control. The WA3 hard disk drive is of a thin film head design with capabilities ranging from 1.27GB to 3.8GB. With a spindle speed of 5,400 rpm an <10msec seek time and with idle power at 3.5W typical, these drives run cool and support the power modes of Sleep, Standby, Idle and Read/Write/Seek. Other features include: PRML Read Channel, PIO Mode 4, Multi-Word DMA Mode 2, Automatic/Host Power and Saving Mode, and the ability to sustain 10gs of operating shock. Samsung's success with the WA3 is a step toward the company's strategic goal of becoming one of the largest players in the world HDD market.
