Ultra-deepwater Drill Ship
Samsung Heavy Industries Co. has developed an
advanced ultra-deepwater drill ship capable of
drilling in depths of up to 10,000 feet. The drill ship
represents a new generation of drilling vessel
designed to meet the technological challenges of
ultra-deepwater, and incorporates the additional
capability of extended well testing (EWT) and
simultaneous drilling and testing operations. The
key to the 105,000-ton drill ship's deepwater
performance is its dynamic positioning (DP) system.
The combination of DP, satellite and seabed
positioning systems provides for the maximum
degree of safety and reliability.
Samsung Heavy's first drill ship, "Deepwater Pathfinder," was successfully delivered
Sept. 30th 1998 to Conoco/ Reading & Bates and other five other such vessels are
currently under construction.

Phenom Express Hand-held PC
LG Electronics has introduced the new Phenom
Express hand-held PC which is geared to meet all
the e-mail needs of today's mobile professionals. A
special e-mail/internet set-up wizard allows users to
configure the Phenom Express for on-line
communication and LG's enhanced attachment
capability enables e-mail to be viewed on the road.
With its sleek, curvilinear look, the Phenom Express
sets a new standard in design excellence. The
deceptively large battery compartment provides for
an impressive battery life of 12 hours. The Phenom
Express is powered by Windows CE 2.0 and the
upgradable ROM ensures that the user will be able to
change easily to the new version of the Windows CE operating system without outside
help.
The new Phenom Express includes a built-in (V.90) 56kbps modem; 32MB RAM
Memory; and a wide 8¨û diagonal, 256-color 640x240 screen. The new Phenom
Express is equipped with a built-in VGA outport. The VGA port allows users to run the
PowerPoint '97 presentation program by simply connecting the Phenom to any monitor
or VGA display without the trouble and expense of purchasing a special cable or VGA
PC card.
The Phenom Express includes a standard-sized parallel port through which to attach a
printer.
Phenom Express was selected as the best hand-held PC in the October 1998 issue of
Pen Computing, an American mobile computer magazine.
After an extensive review, the magazine declared it to be a "Notebook PC Killer," a
product powerful and versatile enough to push notebook computers out of the market.
Pen Computing, in particular, cited Phenom Express' user-friendly keyboard,
high-quality display, long battery life, elegant design and high speed modem as the
principal reasons why the product stood out among hand-held PC products. The
market for handheld PCs will grow rapidly and the LG hand-held PC is positioned to
become a winning product in the near future.

Automatic Grease Lubricator
As a leading manufacturer of self-contained single point
lubricators (SPL), Korea LubeTech Co., Ltd (KLT) has
competed in global markets with its own brand of automatic
grease lubricator, Pulsarlube, for five years. In addition to
Pulsarlube's numerous features and user benefits, KLT has
recognized consumer demands for advanced technology to be
more user/environment friendly. As a result of continuous R&D
activity for the past two years, KLT has now launched a new
generation of lubricator, the Pulsarlube-V. Controlled by a
special microprocessor to ensure a reliable and predictable
lubricant dispensing operation, pressure in the Pulsarlube-V is
provided through the principle of inert gas generation to power
the installed piston. Lubricant is then dispensed through an
outlet at the bottom of the unit. The rate at which lubricant is
dispensed can be varied. Furthermore, Pulsarlube-V offers
other superior features, including: a large LC display that allows quick reading; a
one-touch mode
switch that eliminates complicated procedures; a quality microprocessor control that
ensures accurate lubricant dispensing; and an auto purge cut-out that guarantees
avoidance of over-lubrication.
This model of Pulsarlube is has a wide variety of industrial applications, especially in
the mining, cement, iron and steel, power generation and paper industries. Among the
tough, heavy duty conditions ideal for Pulsarlube applications are where:
- 1) a contamination is present and can cause bearing damage,
- 2) access is limited or difficult,
- 3) applications are not inspected frequently,
- 4) the environment is wet or corrosive,
- 5) maintenance costs must be reduced,
- 6) production output is critical,
- 7) downtime losses are high.
The company's sustained efforts in function and design tests turned out be a valuable
investment by boosting long-term export turnover. In 1997, Korea Lube-Tech Co., Ltd
generated sales of $1.1 million, primarily in Europe, North America and Oceania. In
1998, total exports jumped to approximately $3 million, a trend which is expected to
continue as the company develops new markets.

Electro-luminescent Display
The vital element in an Electro-luminescent Display (ELD)
is a fluorescent substance. When sandwiched between two
electrodes, it luminesces through the application of A.C.
voltage. The ELD, utilized as small LCD panels in
hand-held phones, calculators, watches, AD signs,
electronic dictionaries and agendas, is fingered to be the
next-generation display device after TFT-LCD. Presently,
ELD is the subject of intense development efforts in
Germany, the United States and Japan. However, technical
problems causing high productions costs have made
commercial production of the substance difficult.
In response to these problems, CND Co., Ltd. has
developed a thick-panel ELD (Electro Luminescence)
Display. CND's thick panel represents a far simpler
construction, requiring an operating voltage of one-third
normally required and hence more economical.
CND's product exceeds existing ELD performance in vibration and impact resistance,
and can be operated in the -50¡É~+65¡É temperature range. Its operating life is 25,000
hours, more than twice that of existing ELDs, and its light emission properties are
excellent, delivering constancy in brightness and chromaticity. Furthermore, at 0.3
mm, the product's depth represents an advance on the present standard of 0.5mm.
The Korea Electronic Parts Research Institute and in cooperation with CND will develop
application techniques for the display and will apply for the patents on the thick panel
display production method and the color ELD in the United States, Japan, and
individual countries of the European Union.
CND's new color EL and production method technology is expected to boost product
quality by setting new standards in chromaticity, the essential product of a combination
of the merits of both thick and thin EL panel techniques.
